Dominique Francon

I am reading the book The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand and am just getting to know the character of Dominique Francon, the daughter of Guy Francon, who is a big man in the architecture world and very recognized among the elite. Dominique is lean and beautiful with long blond hair, knows everyone and can impress anyone if she wants to. She went and lived many months among the poorest street people because a very popular/successful journalist friend asked her to and as a favor to her father to learn more about some real estate. She fit right in - didn't wear make-up or rich clothes, just did what they did and socialized and friended all her neighbors so none of them even knew that she had grown up in a mansion or had travelled the world. She's talking to this journalist friend and he's perplexed because she is sometime sooo perfect and charming in social settings but at times she's too open and honest and it makes th elite squirm. "You know, it's such a peculiar thing - our idea of mankind in general. We all have a sort of vague, glowing picture when we say that, something solemn, big and important. But actually, all we know of it is the people we meet in our lifetime. Look at them. Do you know any you'd feel big and solemn about. There's nothing but [describes every day people in a less than flattering light]..... As a matter of fact, one can feel some respect for people when they suffer. They have a certain dignity. But have you ever looked at them when they're enjoying themselves? That's when you see the truth. Look at those who spend the money they've slaved for - at amusement parks and side shows. Look at those who're rich and have the whole world open to them. Observe what they pick out for enjoyment. Watch them in the smarter speak-easies. That's your mankind in general. I don't want to touch it!" I love that she has grown up in this elite world, learned and mastered all their social rules, but sees people for who they are still and can get along wonderfully with anyone, elite or slum. Her father can't stand her. (I bet she's going to end up marrying Rourke)
